Cincinnati's Fine Arts Fund Remains on Target in Difficult Year

Cincinnati's Fine Arts Fund, oldest and most profitable in the U.S., made it through a difficult year to report on-target donations for 2008. The total raised was $12.3 million, $3,000 over the campaign goal. The announcement was made in conjunction with the presentation of the Scripps Corbett Awards, successor to the Post Corbett Awards, founded 26 years ago by arts patrons J. Ralph and Patricia Corbett and the Cincinnati Post. The Post, owned by Cincinnati-based Scripps Howard, ceased publication Dec. 31, 2007.

Gerhard Samuel Dies in Seattle

Composer, conductor, teacher Gerhard Samuel passed away March 25 at his home in Seattle, Washington. Born in Bonn, Germany in 1924, Samuel moved to the United States with
his immediate family in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution. His long international career included 20 years as professor of conducting and music director of the Philharmonia Orchestra at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

This story, first published Dec. 27, 2007, was my final column for The Cincinnati Post, which ceased publication Dec. 31, after 126 years. The year I arrived (1984) was the year The Post moved from the Times-Star building on Broadway to 125 E. Court St., just adjacent to the Hamilton County courthouse (hence the title).

Cincinnati in New York New Year's Eve

Kristjan Järvi, brother of Cincinnati Symphony music director Paavo Järvi, will make his debut with the CSO New Year's Eve at Music Hall. Dubbed "Bernstein's New York Story," it will be an all-American program with music from "West Side Story" featuring tenor Rodrick Dixon and soprano Ellie Dehn. Järvi, a New Yorker himself since the age of 7, is founder of New York's Absolute Ensemble as well as a growing presence on the international conducting scene. His Cincinnati debut was as conductor of John Adams' "Nixon in China" for Cincinnati Opera at Music Hall in July.
