September in Cincinnati is Oktoberfest Zinzinnati and arts groups gearing up for the new season. Look for the opening of the Cincinnati Symphony's 2013-2014 season featuring Percy Grainger's rarely performed "The Warriors (Music to an Imaginary Ballet)," also the Cincinnati Pops with George Takei, and the CSO's annual gala with violin superstar Anne-Sophie Mutter.

The Cincinnati Symphony celebrates its new season with a gala performance by violin superstar Anne-Sophie Mutter. Mutter will perform the Violin Concerto by Antonin Dvorak and Dvorak's Romance for Violin and Orchestra. Also on the program, to be led by guest conductor Ignat Solzhenitsyn, are Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations" and Chacony by Henry Purcell, edited by Benjamin Britten. Tickets begin at $25. Carmen Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition

Sponsored by the International Trumpet Guild with support from the Herb Alpert Foundation, the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition is being held this year at CCM. The biennial event concludes with a gala concert featuring performances by the competition finalists, judges and clinicians, accompanied by the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra led by Scott Belck. Judges for the competition are Byron Stripling, Bobby Shew and Jon Faddis. Note: All competition events are free and open to the public. CCM's Mark Gibson conducts the American premiere of the 1867 original version (in French) of Verdi's "Don Carlos." Roles will be sung by CCM students, alumni and faculty members, with guest artist Kevin Thompson, bass, as the Grand Inquisitor. There will be a break for dinner between acts I-III and acts III (continued)-V. Participating will be the CCM Chamber Choir and Chorale, the UC Men's and Women's Choruses and the CCM Concert and Philharmonia Orchestras.
