Hear something old and something new on Cincinnati stages in March, with music from Shakespeare's plays and a new Saxophone Concerto by Cincinnati composer Frank Proto, commissioned by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. The Chieftains will  help the Cincinnati Pops celebrate St. Patrick's Day and to open the month, the Philharmonia and Concert Orchestras at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music perform a Mahler marathon, with two of his symphonies in one day.

Classical Revolution Cincinnati has two shows this month. The first, March 10 at Northside Tavern, features violinist Tatiana Berman (founder and artistic director of the Constella Festival),  double bassist Rick Robinson (of CutTime Simfonica), the Pray Ensemble -- siblings Allan, Lauren and Christopher Pray -- and the saxophone duo Brickmeat. Robinson and the Pray Ensemble will perform March 11 at 1215 Wine Bar and Coffee Lab in Over-the-Rhine. Admission to both shows is free.

This annual concert celebrates African-American musical traditions and influences. Theme for this year will be African-Americans in uniform such as the Buffalo Soldiers and the Tuskegee Airmen. John Morris Russell, conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra will conduct. Hear gospel to film music, classical to Americana. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis will perform jazz selections from Duke Ellington and Bill Strayhorn. The Community Mass Choir, comprising singers from area churches, will sing music by James Horner from the film "Glory," also "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "The Impossible Dream" and music by Ellington for chorus and orchestra. This special event by the Linton Music Series celebrates the opening of an art exhibition featuring the work of Linton co-founder Dick Waller. Pianist Orli Shaham will perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."
Violinist Timothy Lees, concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and CSO principal cellist Ilya Finkelshteyn will join Shaham in the Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in B Major, Op. 8, by Brahms. Cincinnati's early music ensemble Catacoustic Consort joins with the innovative chamber ensemble concert:nova in a salute to William Shakespeare. Hear music composed for his plays on early instruments and music inspired by them on contemporary ones. From Shakespeare's day hear selections by Robert Johnson, Thomas Morley and Anthony Holborne. From the 19th and 20th centuries, hear music by Amy Beach, Sir Henry Bishop, Igor Stravinsky, Eric Wolfgang Korngold, Ned Rorem and Paul Moravec. Soprano soloist will be Youngmi Kim. Jennifer Joplin of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will provide a narrative thread for the program with excerpts from Shakespeare's plays and sonnets.
