The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has announced a new principal trumpet, Matthew Ernst, effective beginning with the 2014-2015 season. A native of Massillon, Ohio, Ernst currently serves on the faculty of the University of Virginia and is principal trumpet of the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra. Prior to that, he was acting principal trumpet of the Virginia Symphony and associate principal trumpet of the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans.

A committed educator, Ernst has held teaching positions at the University of New Orleans and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in addition to the University of Virginia. He earned his bachelor of music degree from the University of Michigan and master of music degrees from Southern Methodist University in both trumpet performance and wind conducting.

Cincinnati audiences heard Ernst perform with the CSO on its recent collaboration with the MusicNOW Festival in March at Music Hall. And you won’t have to wait until next season to hear him again: He will perform the final concert of the CSO season May 2 and 3 at Music Hall, Beethoven’s Ninth and Mahler’s Eighth Symphonies on the 2014 May Festival and with the Cincinnati Pops at Riverbend June 7, July 4 and July 19. In addition, he will perform with the CSO for Cincinnati Opera’s productions of “Carmen” and “Madame Butterfly” in June and July and for the CSO’s “LumenoCity” August 1-3 at Washington Park.

Coming up at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the CSO is an all-American program featuring works by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber and Steven Mackey. Guest artist will be Orli Shaham in Mackey’s piano concerto “Stumble to Grace” (2011), a CSO premiere, and Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra, “The Age of Anxiety.” Also on the program, to be led by guest conductor David Robertson, are three dance episodes from Bernstein’s “On the Town” and Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

Tickets begin at $12. Call (513) 381-3300 or order online at www.cincinnatisymphony.org

Note: As part of the CSO’s collaboration with Orchestras Feeding America, all tickets are $12 for Friday’s concert with a canned food donation All donations benefit Cincinnati’s Freestore Foodbank. Last year the CSO collected 557 pounds of canned food. Most needed items are peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, canned chicken and soups.
