Dueling Piano Competitions

There are two piano competitions going on in Cincinnati this week.

The World Piano Competition, now in its 55th year, just concluded its Young Artist Division Competition and is welcoming participants in its Artist Division.  Events begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (July 12) in Jarson-Kaplan Theater at the Aronoff Center.

And at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the very first Liszt Competition, held in conjunction with the newly formed “Art of the Piano” Master Class and Recital Series, takes place at 1:30 p.m. Monday (July 11) in Robert Werner Recital Hall at CCM.

Both are open to the public.

The “Art of the Piano” Liszt Competition takes place at 1:30 p.m. July 11 in Werner Recital Hall at CCM, with the winners recital at 7 p.m. July 16, also in Werner Hall. Admission is $15.

There are master classes daily 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-4:30 p.m. in Werner Hall with pianists Awadagin Pratt (July 13 and 15), HaeSun Paik (July 12), Yoshikazu Nagai (July 13 and 14) and Michael Chertock (July 15 and 16).  Admission is $15 per event, $30 for daily passes.

The preliminaries of the World Piano Competition Artist Division are 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2:30-5:30 p.m. July 12 and 13.  Quarterfinals are 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2:30-6:30 p.m. July 14.  Semifinals are 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. July 15. 

The finalists’ “Go for the Gold” concert is 3 p.m. July 17, with reception, dinner and awards presentation beginning at 5 p.m. afterward.  Winners receive cash prizes and performance opportunities.

All rounds of the competition take place in Jarson-Kaplan Theater.
