The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and May Festival Chorus led by May Festival music director James Conlon have been selected to participate in the “Spring for Music” Festival in New York’s Carnegie Hall in  May, 2013.  It will be the Chorus' first appearance at Carnegie Hall in 12 years.

The event, which is being inaugurated this spring, is a festival of concerts by North American symphony and chamber orchestras, to be presented annually.  Its goal is to foster greater innovation in each organization’s home market by serving as a laboratory for adventurous and creative programming   The CSO and May Festival Chorus are among only six organizations chosen for the 2013 festival.  The others are the Baltimore, Albany, Buffalo, Oregon and National Symphony Orchestras.  Repertoire will be announced at a later date.

Ironically, Music Hall in Cincinnati will be undergoing revitalization during the 2012-13 season.  Said Steven Sunderman, director of administration, marketing and development for the May Festival:  “The timing of this invitation comes at a perfect time for the organization.  For the first time in history, since Music Hall was built, the Festival is unable to perform in its home.  This is the perfect occasion to bring Cincinnati’s May Festival to Carnegie Hall.”

The last time the May Festival Chorus performed at Carnegie Hall was in October, 2001, in the shadow of 9/11, when Conlon led the CSO and Chorus in Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.  The CSO led by music director Paavo Järvi performed at Carnegie Hall in February, 2010 with pianist Radu Lupu.
