This evening of holiday music begins at 6 p.m. with a variety of student and faculty ensembles of the CCM Preparatory Department. At 7:15, musicians of the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra will perform Americana standards, including "In the Mood" and "Take the A Train." The evening concludes with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra Brass Quintet in a "multi-sensory portrait of America," followed by fireworks at dark. Kids games and activities will be offered and food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Free and open to the public.

"Silent Night" by Kevin Puts

Cincinnati Opera presents the Cincinnati premiere of Kevin Puts' "Silent Night." With libretto by Mark Campbell, "Silent Night" tells the true story of the Christmas Eve truce during World War I when opposing sides laid down their arms for a night of comradeship. Based on the 2005 French film "Joyeux Noel," the 2011 opera will be sung in English, French, German and Italian with English super titles. Cast members include tenor Thomas Blondelle as Nikolaus Sprink, soprano Erin Wall as Anna Sorensen and baritones Phillip Addis as Lt. Audebert, Craig Irvin as Lt. Horstmayer and Gabriel Preisser as Lt. Gordon. David Charles Abell will conduct the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, with stage direction by Eric Simonson. The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra opens its 20th season in Covington's Devou Park with Circus Mojo of Ludlow. The KSO, led by music director James R. Cassidy, will accompany high-wire acrobatics with a thematic program including "Entry of the Gladiators," "Walkin' on Sunshine," "Charivari," "Allegria, "Wipe Out," "Ozzy Circus Bus," etc. Admission is free. Note: This program was cancelled Labor Day weekend, 2013 because of weather.

Cincinnati Opera presents its first ever baroque opera and its second production in Corbett Theater at the School for Creative and Performing Arts with Francesco Cavalli's 1651 "La Calisto." Based on a tale from Ovid's "Metamorphoses," the opera about Jove's (the king of the gods) shenanigans to get his hands on the nymph Calisto features bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch as Jove, soprano Nathalie Paulin as Calisto, soprano Alexandra Deshorties as Juno and countertenor Michael Maniaci as Endymion. David Bates will lead the Cincinnati Sym
phony Orchestra, joined by the early music ensemble Catacoustic Consort. Stage direction is by Ted Huffman. The opera will be sung in Italian with English super titles. Note: The production, with scenic design by David Centers, utilizes the same creative team as last season's "Galileo Galilei" by Philip Glass. Cincinnati Opera closes its 2014 summer festival with perennial favorite "Madame Butterfly" by Puccini. Starring as Cio-Cio San will be soprano Maria Luigia Borsi, with tenor Shawn Mathey as Pinkerton, mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor as Suzuki, baritone Roberto de Candia as Sharpless and tenor Steven Cole as Goro. The production, with scenic design by Paul Shortt, was created for Cincinnati Opera. The opera will be sung in Italian with English super titles. Ramon Tebar will lead the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Stage direction is by Marc Verzatt.
