November 2013 marks the inaugural concerts of Louis Langr
ée as the 13th music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Also this month, the 2013 Constella Festival of Music and Fine Arts concludes with violinist Joshua Bell and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music launches its centennial celebration of composer Benjamin Britten with a performance of his rarely heard opera "Owen Wingrave."

October in Cincinnati is the Constella Festival of Music and Fine Arts. Now in its third year, Constella adds its own blend of music, art and dance to the new season.

September in Cincinnati is Oktoberfest Zinzinnati and arts groups gearing up for the new season. Look for the opening of the Cincinnati Symphony's 2013-2014 season (its first with music director Louis Langrée), also the Cincinnati Pops with George Takei, and the CSO's annual gala with violin superstar Anne-Sophie Mutter.

August, 2013 in Cincinnati is "LumenoCity," a free multi-media spectacular August 3 and 4 in Washington Park in Over-the-Rhine to introduce the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's 13th music director, Louis Langrée.  It will be a digitally created light and sound show using Music Hall as the backdrop, with music by the CSO led by Langrée and Cincinnati Pops conductor John Morris Russell. Stay tuned for whatever August brings in its wake.

July takes off with a boom -- the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's "Red, White and Boom," to be exact, on the Fourth of July  -- and continues with opera, including Cincinnati Opera's blockbuster "Aida" at Music Hall and Philip Glass' "Galileo Galilei" at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, a Britten salute with tenor Marco Panuccio, Dvorak with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, the newly re-organized World Piano Competition, the "Art of the Piano" recital series at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a burst of community concerts.

June in Cincinnati is opera. Cincinnati Opera, beginning with the Opera's annual "Back to the Zoo" concert remembering the company's first 70 years performing at the Cincinnati Zoo. Look also for events at Riverbend Music Center (Cincinnati Pops and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra's first (annual?) listeners' "Choice" concert, featuring works chosen by audience vote during the 2012-2013 season.

May in Cincinnati means the Cincinnati May Festival, oldest continuing choral festival in the Western Hemisphere. Look also for the annual collaboration between the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and the Vocal Arts Ensemble, the final concert of the Linton Music Series 2012-13 season (a special reunion of the Guarneri String Quartet) and the season finale of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor Robert Spano.

April in Cincinnati means "Music Now," a series devoted to what's new in music and the arts, chamber music galore, Steve Reich and something called Igudesman & Joo. Regarding the latter, if you loved Victor Borge, you'll love these two guys, who dispense classical music with wit fit to split (your sides, that is). Mozart is on the calendar, too, with his "Magic Flute" at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra's annual Ohio Mozart Festival.

March brings Shakespeare to Cincinnati, musically speaking. Also Mahler, Schumann and in a twist on Mussorgsky, "music at an exhibition," with paintings by Linton Music Series founder Richard Waller shown in conjunction with a special performance of Mussorgsky's colorful work. In the new music category, hear Cincinnati composer Frank Proto's new Saxophone Concerto commissioned by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, to be premiered March at the School for Creative and Performing Arts.

February brings Verdi (Requiem) and Weill ("Threepenny Opera") to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, "Romeo and Juliet" to Cincinnati Ballet and the first visit of violinist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra since 2008. In addition, there'll be bouquets of early music, beginning with recorder virtuoso Matthias Maute Feb. 1, and continuing throughout the month with Cincinnati's first Early Music Festival.

The new year brings Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Lutoslawski and Brahms; also jazz and chamber opera.  Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra music director laureate Paavo Järvi returns to lead the CSO, which also welcomes pianists Ingrid Fliter and Stewart Goodyear. Peerless violinist Christian Tetzlaff performs a solo recital for Chamber Music Cincinnati to end the month on a high note.

November 2012 in Cincinnati marks the debut of Louis Langrée as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's music director-designate. Langrée, who succeeds Paavo Järvi as CSO music director in September, 2013, leads concerts Nov. 9, 10, 15, 17 and 18 at Music Hall. November also brings a visit to the CSO by percussionist Evelyn Glennie, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in "Bond and Beyond" and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in an all-Debussy recital to close the 2012 Constella Festival of Music and Fine Arts.

New Jazz Series Debuts at Washington Platform

Cincinnati has a wealth of fine jazz musicians.  To give them a "platform" to perform. bassist Michael Sharfe has established a brand new jazz series at Washington Platform restaurant at the corner of Court and Elm Streets downtown.  A comfortable, intimate venue with easy proximity to Cincinnati's arts district in Over-the-Rhine (Music Hall, Memorial Hall and the School for Creative and Performing Arts) it offers fine jazz in a prime location.
